The word Transformers brings back one memory in particular. Giant robots that can transform into cars and trucks and where usually busy fighting over something or another. The old show brought entertainment to us in our younger years, and the Transformer toys kept us busy afterwards. We all can remember wasting entire days at a time playing with Optimus Prime.
Although the first transformer toys had nothing in common with the show save for the fact that they were transformable. The toy line called Go Bots featured transformable cars and trucks. The toy line was eventually acquired and then turned into Transformers. Shortly after this the Transformers TV show was produced.
However let us not delve into the history of the anime, for that is a long story unto itself. When most of us think Transformers we think of the old Generation 1 action figures. Essentially hunks of plastic and metal that had a limited range of movement and could transform into cars and other vehicles. These things nonetheless were on every childs Christmas list, stiff joints or not.
During this period of time the toys began to grow in complexity and die cast was the way to build them. The method of manufacturing called die cast is literally pouring liquid into molds and letting it set. This produced extremely solid, durable parts but made joint movement very limited. Though not limited to just the Transformers line of toys, this was the industry standard for a while.
As we reached the later part of the last century plastic had come to replace metal as the primary method of construction. Stronger and thinner types of plastic were being used in construction. Full range of movement was now possible. By the time the next weekday morning cartoon series was ready the quality of the figures was very high.
Children are amazed by many things but having a car transform into a robot, and to be able to pose every joint was a true gift. Later on the Computer Generated series Beast Wars Transformers came out. The line of action figures for this series was very large, and the quality second to none. The construction techniques for these toys had improved immensely, and they used socket type joints similar to what our skeletons use.
When interest in the original series began to pick back up the companies started re-releasing the toys. Optimus Prime, Megatron and others were now fully transformable and had full range of movement. Most of us felt like kids again. Although we werent as rough with the figures this time around.
You may be more familiar with the toys from the recent live action movie though. More complex and higher attention to detail these toys are now what our children play with. The durability of most of these toys is pretty good. Even though most of us point out that action figures should be admired from afar and not abused.
In closing whenever I see a new Transformers toy regardless of if I like them or not I always remember the ones I played with as a kid. Essentially the most impressive toys at the time they were the best things to play with. The quality and attention to detail was second to none and most modern day toys still pale in comparison to these.
